Lezley Saar’s
work consists of large old books that are hollowed out and refilled with
small narrative paintings as well as leather-bound book covers or yellowed
pages nailed together to form a canvas upon which images are
painted and
objects affixed.
The work
fixates on duality: black/ white, male/ female, sane/ insane, natural/
mechanical, material/ spiritual ... posing questions, highlighting
ironies, celebrating anomalies of nature and embracing contradictions that
are philosophical, sexual and emotional.
